the history of the st simons island pier
The St Simons Island Pier was built in the 1800s as a way to get cargo off of merchant ships. It is located at the end of Mallery Street on the south end of the island and is considered part of the Pier Village area. The tourist industry on St Simons Island took off around the 1870s and the Pier was where visitors landed when coming by boat to the island. The Pier has since been expanded to accommodate larger ships and provide more space for fishing.
St Simons Island Pier today
Today, people from all over gather on the pier to fish and crab. Some pier visitors are there to catch a glimpse of dolphins, sea turtles, pelicans, seagulls, or just see what the fishermen are reeling in. It is always a special treat to see one of the large ships passing between Jekyll Island and St Simons Island as they travel to and from the Port of Brunswick (also known as Colonel’s Island Terminal). It’s also romantic to enjoy an evening ice cream while walking along the St Simons Island Pier. The Pier has outdoor lighting along the length of the pier making it the perfect for evening fishing or hanging out.
As more and more people find out about how beautiful St Simons Island is as a vacation destination, the more visitors find themselves touring the Pier and quickly realize what a magical place it truly is. There are several St Simons Island vacation rentals near the Pier Village area on St Simons Island.
