The Georgia-Florida Weekend is a yearly event that takes place in the Golden Isles. It brings together fans of college football and the beautiful charm of the Georgia coast. This rivalry game between the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the University of Florida Gators transforms the serene St. Simons Island into a lively hub of excitement and festivity. This rivalry began in the early 1900s and has been played every season since 1926. It is a rivalry that is still going strong!
Frat Beach
Frat Beach is known as the largest costume party on the Georgia coast. It has been a tradition of alumni, college students, and fans to dress up in costumes and flock to East Beach on the eve of the game. The beach becomes one big weekend party with mostly University of Georgia students. Frat Beach generally takes place the Friday before the big game. Lighthouse Trolleys Land and Sea Tours offers safe and reliable transportation to and from East Beach during the celebrations.
Live Music
Many St Simons Island pubs and bars offer live music the weekend of the Georgia-Florida football game. In the past, Rafters, Palm Coast Café, and Brogens South have offered live music during the weekend of Georgia-Florida. Check out their Facebook pages closer to the event for more details. Some other bar and grills around St Simons that may be providing live music can be found here.
Deals, Specials, and Where to Shop
Many of the local shops and restaurants on St Simons Island offer specials, deals, and prizes during the Georgia-Florida Weekend. Some of those stores and restaurants in the past included Sandy Bottom Bagels, Sunset Slush, Island Dog, and Two Friends. It’s important to represent the Bulldawgs in style! Some of our favorite shops for University of Georgia attire and home goods include Maggie’s Boutique, Gentlemen’s and Ladies Outfitters, Two Friends, The Yellow Canary, and Birdie’s.
Beach Sweep
The Georgia-Florida Beach Sweep is a community event held the morning of the Saturday of the big game. Waste is left behind after all of the partying. This can be a threat to local wildlife and to the beauty of the St Simons coastline. This event is organized by Keep Golden Isles Beautiful in partnership with other local organizations. Volunteers meet at the Old Coast Guard Station. Clean-up supplies are provided and distributed to those who arrive to help.
The Georgia-Florida Weekend is a much anticipated event drawing not only die-hard football fans but also families and tourists who come to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and the special events that surround the game. The convergence of passionate sports enthusiasts and the island’s warm hospitality creates an electric atmosphere that makes Georgia-Florida Weekend a memorable occasion, embodying both the competitive spirit of college football and the laid-back charm of St. Simons Island.
